The RSMS Visa entitles skilled workers to reside in Australia on a permanent basis after being sponsored by an employer in a regional or low population growth area. Regional areas include all areas outside the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong and Melbourne.

A subclass 187 visa entitles the holder to all permanent resident benefits including healthcare, social security benefits and possible eligibility for citizenship.

A subclass 187 visa can be granted to 457 visa holders who have worked for his/her employer for at least two years – this is the Temporary Residence Transition Stream.

A subclass 187 visa can also be granted to skilled overseas workers who have never or only briefly worked in Australia and who have at least 3 years relevant work experience in his/her field – this is the Direct Entry Stream.

There are 2 stages of a subclass 187 visa application:

1.    Nomination

An approved business sponsor must nominate a skilled worker for a position of employment in a regional area.  The position must be from an approved list of occupations and meet salary and other requirements.  The nomination must be certified by a Regional Certifying Body.

2.    Visa Application

The nominated worker must apply for the subclass 187 visa.  The applicant must be under 50 years old, have the necessary skills and work experience for the position and meet English, character and health requirements.
