Australia offers a migration program for overseas professionals or tradespersons who have skills in specific occupations to enter, live and work in Australia as a contribution to the Australian economy.
To qualify for a visa within this program, applicants must be under 50 years of age, with strong English skills and appropriate skills and qualifications for a nominated occupation.
This program operates on an invitation system. Prospective applicants must first submit an Expression of Interest through the SkillSelect application process. Based on the points an applicant obtains through SkillSelect, he/she may then be invited to apply for an appropriate visa.
Points are awarded based on the applicant’s age, English language ability, educational qualifications, study within Australia or regional Australia, work experience within Australia and overseas and other factors.
Based on the points received in SkillSelect, a prospective applicant may be invited to apply for one of the following visas:
Skilled Independent Visa – Subclass 189
A permanent visa for skilled workers to work and live in Australia without sponsorship by an employer or an Australian state or territory government agency.
