Australia offers a number of visas for individuals wishing to continue or further their education. There are visas to study the English language, visas for primary or secondary school students, visas for students looking to undertake tertiary or post-graduate studies and visas for students looking to undertake vocational education or training.
Applicants can only study specific courses or programs that are recognised by the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students and applicants must produce a Confirmation of Enrolment for the relevant course in order to submit an application. Students must meet all pre-requisites for any course he/she intends to study.
There are also a number of financial, health, character and English language requirements that must be met.
A student visa will be granted for a period of time that depends on the length of the course that the applicant is enrolled in. Students have limited work rights while studying in Australia. It may be possible for an applicant to bring their immediate family members with them to Australia for the relevant study period.

Independent ELICOS Sector Visa – Subclass 570
A temporary visa for students enrolled in a full-time English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students including courses that result in
a Certificate I, II, III or IV or courses that result in no formal award in Australia.

School Sector Visa – Subclass 571
A temporary visa for students enrolled in a full-time school level (primary or secondary) course in Australia.
Vocational Education and Training Sector Visa – Subclass 572
A temporary visa for students enrolled in a full-time vocational education and training course including a Certificiate I, II, III or IV, VET
diploma, VET advanced diploma or a vocational graduate certificate or diploma in Australia.

Higher Education Sector Visa – Subclass 573
A temporary visa for students enrolled in a full-time higher education course including a bachelor degree, associate degree, graduate
certificate or diploma, Masters degree (coursework) or higher education diploma or advanced diploma in Australia.

Postgraduate Research Sector Visa – Subclass 574
A temporary visa for students enrolled in a full-time postgraduate research course including a Masters degree (research) or a Doctoral
degree in Australia.
Non Award Sector Visa – Subclass 575
A temporary visa for students enrolled in a non-award foundations studies course or any other course that does not lead to an award.
Foreign Affairs or Defence Sector Visa – Subclass 576
A temporary visa for students who have been sponsored by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or the Department of Defence to study any full-time course in Australia.
