The Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa is a temporary visa that enables an individual with specific skills and qualifications to live and work in a specified regional area of Australia for up to four years.
A holder of a subclass 489 visa is eligible to apply for a permanent residence Skilled Regional Visa (Subclass 887). The applicant must have lived in a regional area for at least 2 years and worked in a regional area for at least one year before making a permanent residence application.
Specified regional areas are all areas other than Sydney, Newcastle, the Central Coast, Wollongong, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Melbourne.
This visa is for applicants who have not met the pass mark for a Skilled Independent Visa but who have skills that are valuable to regional areas in Australia. An applicant must obtain sponsorship from an eligible relative or be nominated by an Australian state or territory government agency before applying for this visa.
The applicant must be nominated for an occupation from a specified list, the Skilled Occupations List (SOL) or Consolidated Sponsored Occupations List (CSOL), depending on the nominator.
The applicant must also meet other requirements including age (under 50 years), English language skills, qualifications, work experience, health and character.
